In November 1910, was transferred from the Public Works Department of Ceylon to the Public Works Depart- ment of Hongkong as 1at Assistant Director of Public works. In the terms of my appointment, it was stated, inter alia, that the salary should be £720 to £810 per annum by two triennial increments of £45 and also that, during the absence of the Director of Public Works, I should act for him.

In 1911, certain alterations were made in the salaries of the officers of the Public Works Department and duty pay was introduced.
3. In the case of the Director of Public Works, the existing sterling salary, £1,000-£1,200 by two triennial increments of £100, remained unaltered but £150 a year duty pay was added to it.
4. In the case of the 1st Assistant Director of Public Works, the existing sterling salary was reduced from £720-£810 per annum by two triennial increments of £45, as stated above, to £690-£780 by three triennial increments of £30 and £75 per annum duty pay.
5. When the altered salary of my appointment was offered to me, I declined it.
